Owen directed the operations from the Cape initially, and worked his way up the East coast. The expedition was undertaken to survey the entire coast of Africa and southern Arabia for a period of some four years. His meticulous work laid the foundation for what we know about the geography to this day. He also had much interaction with the inhabitants of the ports and islands along the coast, which makes the volumes an interesting read.
