South African Biographical & Historical Studies Volume 15. The Career of John Moreland, emigration agent.
The book is therefore the biography of John Moreland but he was so intimately connected with his employer Joseph Byrne that it becomes Byrne's biography as well. Seperation came about 1850 as a result of Byrne's bankruptcy and the consequent collapse of his emigration scheme. The reasons for Byrne's failure are analysed by Dr Clark in a survey of the letters exchanged between the two men. A special feature of the book is its description of Natal more than a century plus ago. Many well-known characters of early Natal like Governor Pine, Donald Moodie, Phlip Allen, D.D.Buchanan, Lushington-Phillips, Henry Cloete, and others are portrayed in action and word. The struggles of the settlers to establish themselves in the colony of Natal gain a new dimension in their pathetic letters and appeals for assistance. Most of this material comes directly from the Moreland Family Papers and has not previously been published. Foreward by Alan Hattersley. xi plus maps- 312 pages detailed and expansive text. Very clean copy. No marks.
