Original faux-leather navy blue boards with gilt lettering to spine. Tightly bound and in excellent condition.

The original aim of the Work was the pursuit of an ambition to comment- within a single volume-upon 'medals' earned for various activities from 1793 to the present day, and the 'men' of the Royal Navy, Royal Marines and Indian Marine who received them. This proved to be a vain hope since it became obvious after eighteen months' endeavour that, for justice  to be accorded the subject, the period under review had to be reduced- hence the limitation enshrined in the title of this Volume 'Naval Medals 1793-1856'.

The central core to each of the numerous Sections is a catalogue of the 'medals' which cumulatively form the a limited part (1793-1856) of the entire Collection of 3,000 pieces, all awarded to officers and men of the R.N., R.M., and the Indian Continent- if one may exclude those earned by Dockyard Mateys! The whole is divided, not unexpectedly, into groupings of various Wars, Campaigns and Battles inclusive of operations such as the suppression of piracy and the slave trade, for which no medals were ever awarded. The history of awards for Gallantry, Meritorious and Long Service is told in a seperate Section, covering the evolutionary history of these awards. The final part of the book is devoted to the detailed research methods used to unearth the stories on the 'men' and their 'medals' which appear in the Work.
