Three volume set. Later bindings with blue cloth and leather corners, spines with raised bands and gilt ruling. The title panels are red with gilt titles. Edges trimmed and with red speckling. Later redish end papers and white blanks. A large folding map and 22 plates. Volume one: 51 prelims, 288 pages, the large folding map has been bound in at page 16, 5 black and white engraved plates, of which 3 fold out. Volume two: Title page, followed by 383 text pages, 8 engravings, of which 2 fold out. Volume three: Title page, followed by 488 text pages, 9 black and white engravings.

CONDITION DETAILS: The bindings have some edge wear, and volume three has a tear at the head of the spine - see close up image. Each volume contains the book plate of Sir John Lubbock on the front paste down and the Halse family book plate on the free front end paper. Robin Halse was well known in the hunting fraternity and his daughter, Jane, currently runs Rowland Ward Publications. The title pages have Lubbock's name in pen. There is some foxing, spotting and staining throughout all three volumes. Tissue guards were inserted later. Repairs to the map and some of the plates were done skillfully.
