The first edition of this book, Mandela's first title, was published while he was imprisoned on Robben Island and was, for obvious reasons, banned in South Africa. It was simultaneously published in both hardcover and softcover editions. They are both scarce - in my experience, this softcover ediiton in wrappers is possibly even scarcer than the hardcover edition - definitely so in collectable condition. The copy on offer is a Review Copy with the publishers slip loosely inserted. The publication date is indicated as 31st. May 1965.

The book is in very good plus condition. There is very slight browning of the spine and a small strip of the adjacent rear panel. There is also minimal bumping of the lower corner of the rear wrapper. Internally very clean and unmarked. Pages 129 - 160 are printed on a slightly whiter paper stock - this can be seen on the image of the front edge of the book. I have not seen this before on other copies of this title and may have been restricted to advance review copies.
