This is Mandela's first book and is without doubt his scarcest, particularly in this hardcover version. For obvious reasons it was banned in South Africa. There was a paperback version published simultaneously, which, although also scarce, appears on the market more frequently. The US edition is also more common. The book was edited by Ruth First and has an introduction by Oliver Tambo. This is a very good plus copy in a complete non price-clipped very good plus dw. The top fore and rear corners are slightly bumped. The red top edge has some light staining and has leaked minimally on to the top of the front and rear free endpapers. A small bubble (binding fault) beneath the front pastedown has offset slightly as a light indentation on to the adjoining free endpaper. The book is otherwise unmarked and clean. A superior copy of this title and one that will surely be missing from most Mandela collections.
