The voage of the S.S. "Tintagel Castle" transporting 1200 troops to Cape Town in March 1900. The c0-author is Ernest Shackleton, then Third Officer. It was on this voyage that Shackleton met Cedric Longstaff, Lt. 2nd. East Surrey Regt., his father Llewellyn was the principal financial backer of the National Antarctic Expedition. Shackleton used his acquaintance with Cedric to obtain an interview with his father who recommended him to Sir Clement Markham for a place on Scott's Discovery Expedition thus starting Shackleton's Polar career. 59pp. profusely illustrated, with a nominal roll of every regiment represented with the names and regimental number of every officer and man and with 6 group photographs including Lovat's Scouts No. 2 Company. In illustrated boards, re-backed with new endpapers but lacking original spine. Boards soiled. An extremely rare work.
