folio, unpaginated, c60 pages, typed introduction (in Portuguese) followed by many tabulated statistics & 24 full page original black & white photographs of students (boys & girls) doing gymnastics in the grounds of "Salvador Correia" Secondary School in Luanda. The boys are doing traditional gymnastics (vaulting, etc.). The girls are doing formal & statuesque exercises (walking in spirals, standing in a star formation, posed around formal lakes, balancing, stretching, group work & pair work, all dressed in immaculate & modest white P.T. uniforms). The statistics measure the height, weight & "Indice de Pignet" of pupils by age over a 4 year period. The students are all European Portuguese, with a few mixed-race, aged 11-17. The whole study is tightly bound in a strong cloth album with leather spine & corners (rubbed) with gilt leather spine label (also rubbed). This is a remarkable example of colonial attitudes to education & expatriate lifestyle in Angola in the 1940s. The photographs have to be seen to be believed !!
