'The reasons for writing this book: it covers a part of Natal which has been neglected regarding historical research. The Ixopo area came into the limelight briefly when Alan Paton's Cry the Beloved Country was filmed here. Descendants of 1820 Settlers live in the region, also those of Dick King who owned a farm near Ixopo. There are others who have as the forebears, Henry Francis Fynn and Henry Ogle, notable pioneers of Natal. Cecil John Rhodes began his new life in South Africa in this district. Most accounts of his illustrious career begin after he went to Kimberley. Two centenaries will be celebrated in the near future; St. John's Church, Ixopo, in 1985, and St. James', Highflats, in 1988. Many steam train enthusiasts are interested in our narrow gauge railway line, busloads of tourists also visiting the area.' - editor's note
