How it works

OCLC Number: 228719974. First printed in: Proceedings of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, v. 8, 1872-73. First separate issue from same setting of type, with heading unchanged, but with changed pagination.
Carter & Pollard [129, 247-250] state that in this forgery certain letters of the type were not cut until after1880; Baughman (p. 97) gives date as 1877.

Thomas J. Wise was an English book collector and biographer who became known for literary forgeries, and stolen documents that were resold or authenticated by him. Wise chose his writers with care. All were notable talents whose work could be expected to prized for years - centuries.
Robert Louis Stevenson was particularly favored by Wise because the poet-author was notoriously uninterested in his own works after they were published. Wise issued four Stevenson forgeries, 'On The Thermal Influence Of Forests' dated 1873, was one.
Printed wrapper detached, else very nice. Domestic s&h $15.
