Bound in contemporary vellum with the spine in five panels, with each panel containing a foil stamped fleur-de-lis. Corners bumped, text block is tight and well bound, the pages bright. The back and front covers both carry a foil stamped figure on a plinth with the words "Hague Comitis" (Latin for the modern Den Haag) engraved on the plinth. The female figure rests her hand on a shield bearing the coat of arms of The Hague, which depicts a stork holding an eel in its beak.

Named C. Crispi Sallustii on the title page, the author's name is given as C. Sallustii Crispi on the half title page, and the publication date as 1689. Generally know as Sallust (86 BC-35 BC), the Roman politician and historian's work enjoyed a revival during the Renaissance as learned Europeans looked to Roman thinkers for inspiration. His works were also used to teach Latin, and were read to complement Tacitus. Sallust supported Julius Caesar, who appointed him a governor in conquered African provinces, a position which saw him amass considerable wealth.
