In his introduction the author states that this work, '...makes no pretence of being a history of the doings of each unit. Such a history would occupy a library of volumes. Rather it is a sort of enlarged directory to show where a particular regiment or battery added to or mayhap lost some of its reputation.' He covers the Foot Guards, Territorial Regiments, Cavalry, Royal Artillery, Corps of Royal Engineers, The Army Service Corps, Royal Army Medical Corps, Army Chaplains' Department and the Army Ordnance and Other Departments.
