The defeat of Fort Mary, Lydenberg by the Boers over the British who were there defending the goldfields commanded by 2nd Lieut. Walter Long and 246 British soldiers of the 94th Regiment was the beginning of the First Boer War. The Siege lasted 86 days with 156 casualties to the British. Mrs. Long was the wife of the commanding officer and the only woman left in camp.
