28pp. pamphlet in the original sewn grey wraps with red lettering. Comprises the three Appeals broadcast from Oslo on April 28, 29 and 30, 1958. This copy bears a signed inscription (in German) from Schweitzer to one Henry Friedmann, believed to be a relative of Sarah Gertrude Millin as it originated from her library and her mother's maiden name was Friedmann.
Covers lightly marked with a 3cm. split at the lower spine. Internally clean. A very good copy and scarce inscribed.
Albert Schweitzer (14 January 1875 - 4 September 1965) was an Alsatian theologian, organist, writer, humanitarian, philosopher, and physician. A Lutheran, Schweitzer challenged both the secular view of Jesus as depicted by the historical-critical method current at this time, as well as the traditional Christian view. Having decided to go to Africa as a medical missionary rather than as a pastor, Schweitzer in 1905 began the study of medicine at the University of Strasbourg. In 1913, having obtained his M.D. degree, he founded his hospital at Lambaréné in French Equatorial Africa. Schweitzer was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize of 1952,[accepting the prize with the speech, "The Problem of Peace". From 1952 until his death he worked against nuclear tests and nuclear weapons with Albert Einstein, Otto Hahn and Bertrand Russell. In 1957 and 1958 he broadcast four speeches over Radio Oslo which were published in Peace or Atomic War.
