Mendelssohn (Sidney) South African Bibliography volume, 2 page 389: Scenes in the South African War described by extracts from letters sent by officers and privates to relations and newspapers. It is stated in the Preface that telegrams sent by the war correspondents were censored in such a manner that there was a grave perversion of the truth, and an example is printed of an original message, with its censored edition by its side. It is stated that with regard to this telegram, "The art of elision ... transferred a captured maxim from the Boers to the English, and converted 180 English prisoners sent to Pretoria into 180 Boers killed."
