\"The Kalahari Desert, in Souhern Africa, is crossed in the middle by the Tropic of Capricorn. To the west lies the mountainous Namaqua Land, to the East the Transvaal and the land of the Bechuana, while the Orange River shuts out the large division of the Cape Colony on the south. Through this wild region a single horseman was making his way on the afternoon of a flaming summer day a brief while ago. He was in the attire of a hunter, with strong leathern leggins, which covered his knees like calvary boots, a short coat belted at the waist, and the orthodox helmet hat, white in color, and which, while it seems to be warm, has been proven to be the best protection that can be devised against the African Sun.
