Ada Cook and her husband and their four children had taken refuge at Mafeking after the clash at Kraaipan. From October 1899 to May 1900 Ada recorded in letter form her observations and events endured during this time.
Colonel Robert Baden-Powell wan the hero and central figure of the siege. Cook has riposted with a vindication of his decision to hold on to Mafeking and of his conduct of the defence.
