Cape Town, South Africa, 1895.

Very good +, original antique map of South Africa during the height of British rule and in the interim period between the two Boer Wars. This map was issued by George Phillip locally, in London and Liverpool

The map is highly detailed, showing roads, elevation, towns, cities, county lines, and more. Goldfields are marked in yellow, reflecting the recent gold rushes including those in the Witwatersrand. Subtly, borders are drawn between the Orange Free State, the Republic of the Transvaal, and the Natalia Republic, and their colonies named, but the title of the map makes no illusions as to who the Cape Colonists want to be in control of the whole area.

The map includes a number of insets, including Rhodesia, Witwatersrand, Pretoria, Cape Town, the Cape Peninsula, Port Elizabeth, Kimberly, Durban, and Pietermaritzburg. A track chart shows maritime routes from the British Isles to Cape Town, as well as British African colonies. South-Eastern England is shown on the scale of the general map.

Folding linen backed folding map.
