This lot comprises a leather bound photograph album measuring 22 x 16cms. with 20 board leaves, each with an original photograph laid down on the front side - hence 20 photographs, mostly full size ie. circa 20x15 cms. - a few being smaller. The front pastedown is hand titled in a calligraphic script "Views of Natal" and the front free endpaper bears a presentation inscription from a Miss Fleming (possibly the photographer) dated Maritzburg, Sept. 1901. This dates the photographs to that year or the end of the nineteenth century.
The photographs are of a fine quality and in like condition and if not professional are at least taken by a skilled amateur photographer. The majority are of views of Pietermaritzburg, including the Royal Visit (the future King George V and Queen Mary, a few of Durban, a few rural scenes and a few ethnographic studies of the local people. All are annotated in ink on the board margins.
The binding of the album is worn and the spine is defective and has largely been lost. Internally the leaves and photographs are in very good condition.
