Early original work by noted photographer William Roe, who worked in Graaff-Reinet and on the Diamond Fields for some 50 years, later assisted by his son, W E Roe. There is a permanent exhibition of his work in the local museum, and he was acknowledged as an equal of Arthur Elliott. Roe and son died within 2 years of each other in 1914 and 1916. The work is not dated, nor does it appear in SABIB. It is presumed to predate 1900.
A PhD thesis on the photographer appeared last year: Die rol van neëntiende-eeuse fotografie in eietydsebewaring: William Roe en Graaff-Reinet.J F Malherbe, 2014 Univ. Stellenbosch, but the author was seemingly not aware of this work, as it does not get a mention, or appear in her bibliography.
