Publisher's card covers with ring binding. Limited to 4000 copies.
Reproductions of 32 paintings by Pierneef which were commissioned for the Johannesburg station concourse in 1929. Initially displayed in the Johannesburg Station, these panels were later removed because of their great value and the very apparent deterioration from soot. After restoration was done by the artist himself they were placed in the Railway Art Gallery. The paintings depict landscapes from various parts of South Africa. All the protective tissue guards are present.
'Pierneef is regarded as a pioneer in the field of South African art, mainly because he was one of the first artists to depict the landscape in a style specially adapted to his surroundings, whereas artists like Wenning and Oerder never quite discarded the European influences.'
A very good copy.
