Pieter van der Westhuizen was born in Pretoria in 1931. He studied art at UNISA under Sakkie Eloff, Leo Theron, Robert Hodgkins and others. in 1960 he worked under Alfred Krentz and later under Eric Laubscher. He then went to study in Belgium and Japan. His works are to be foound in private collections in South Africa, the UK,France, Denmark, Sweden and many more countries.
