In cream cloth with gilt titles to front and spine. 252 pages. Thirteen black and white illustrations. A very good copy. The dust jacket has some edgewear. A presentation inscription on ffep by Carr dated 14th September 1956. Also signed by Carr on title page. An extra loose card inserted also signed by Carr. Frontispiece of Johannesburg Light and Power Station Staff 11 April 1900. The writer has an eye and a memory for authoritative detail and there are literally hundreds of colourful anecdotes throughout, including his trek to Johannesbrug by ox-wagon 1889. His Boer War experiences make one feel that, with classmates fighting on either side and resuming their friendly intercourse in after years, the war could be described as an old-fashioned just, a tiltling between two knights in a tournament encounter. He calls it the ""Last of the Wars between Gentlemen""
