Reminiscences of Kenya 1890-1968,Compiled by the East African Women's League.
Between 1890 and the Second World War, Europeans were encouraged by the British government to chance their arm in a new country, Kenya. This book is a portrait of their successes and failures in establishing homes, farms, shops, hotels and factories in this beautiful Afrian country. The texts, narration of humorous and dangerous incidents, descriptions of scenery and lifestyles, supplied by the pioneers and their sons and daughters not only display the humour, enterprise and determination of these people, but also their honesty in admitting their own naivety and limitations in approaching a new land and its original inhabitants. These reminiscences are illustrated with many as yet unpublished early photographs of Kenya, and by colour reproductions of paintings, and tapestries worked by members of the League, tapestries depicting typical historical scenes from the regions described in the book. This patchwork of narration and illustration recreates the vivid human and physical landscape of Kenya as seen by the pioneers. Maps of each area settled by the Europeans help to form a complete picture of the environment in which these people lived, worked and dreamed.
