In February 1820 Pringle, as leader of a Scottish party, sailed for the Cape under the British Governments assisted emigration scheme. In the Baviaans River Valley, where he and his party settled, he wrote his first South African poems. This new edition of his South African poems contains 38 poems and sonnets, plus three additional poems, Pringle's notes to the poems and the textual history of the poems.
