The author, Herbert Melville Guest (1853-1938), was a pioneering printer and publisher in the Transvaal. During the Anglo-Boer War he served in the Klerksdorp Town Guard. He published several books about the various battles in the area, sometimes even when the action was taking place within less than a mile from his printing press. In Klerksdorp, Guest participated in local institutions and was instrumental in forming the Chamber of Mines and the Chamber of Commerce. He was the first mayor of Klerksdorp from 1910-1911.
