First edition. xii, 340 pages, frontispiece, 31 black and white plates, folding map, blue cloth with crest on the upper cover, titled gilt on the spine - which is faded and frayed at the top and the bottom, book sellers ticket on the front paste down end paper, light foxing, scuff marks on the covers, corners bumped, a good copy.

Czech (Dr. Kenneth) An Annotated Bibliography of African Big Game Hunting Books 1785 - 1999, page 185: maugham provides a detailed description of the terrain and peoples of what is now Mozambique, and includes chapters on its big game as well as his hunting experiences. He recounts lion stalking adventures on the Upper Shire, and among the Gorongoza foothills. Elephants were bagged on the Cheringoma Plateau with rhino, buffalo and hippo collected on the Quelimane and the Zambesi. There is also a chapter on hunting impala and eland.
