Axelson began his researches into the history of the Portuguese in 1936 and soon became well know for his discovery of the farthest stone pillar which Bartolomeu Dias erected in 1488. He details the 17th century activities of the Portuguese in south-east Africa, from their base in Mocambique up the Zambezi into Mashonaland, and on the Mombasa coast. An appendix summarizes survivors' accounts of the shipwrecks on the coast of southern Africa during this period.
