Bound in brown pebble-grained cloth titled gilt on the spines within a gilt decorated border, previous owner's paper title labels on the front free endpapers and two other signatures, another ownership signature at the top of the half title page in volume I, uncut edges, light foxing throughout.
Gilson (David) A Bibliography of Janes Austen, A5, pages 41-43, watermarks 1815 and 1816 called for but not present in this copy, all other points agree.
Gilson notes, 'Publishing history. No details are known. JA was clearly not consulted (having sold the copyright) and no allusion to this edition has been traced in her surviving letters; it is not apparent whether A5 was in fact issued after the author's death (18th July 1817, one surviving copy bears an ownership signature dated 'Sept. 6. 1817.) The price on publication was 12s. Sales may not have been rapid; two copies have been seen in what appear to be later remainder cloth bindings.' This may explain the current binding which in an early grained cloth.
Jane Austen's name was never attached to any of her published novels during her lifetime.
