2pp. als by D.F. Malan in Afrikaans addressed to Mev. Regter Van Zyl, (Elizabeth Van Zyl nee. Reitz - O.F.S. President F.W. Reitz's daughter), on House of Assembly letterhead, dated 20 April, 1945. The letter concerns a portrait photograph of Malan which sculptor Anton Van Wouw had requested, almost certainly with a view to his making a Bust of Malan. It also deals with some personal matters and his interest in having a chat about political matters with the Judge (her husband). As Van Wouw died in July 1945, the Malan sculpture was obviously never done or completed.
Daniel Francois Malan was a South African politician who was the Prime Minister of South Africa from 1948 to 1954. He is seen as a champion of Afrikaner nationalism. His National Party government came to power on the program of apartheid and began its comprehensive implementation. Malan autograph letters are uncommon. Anton Van Wouw was South Africa's foremost sculptor and regarded as the father of South African sculpture.
