This document dated 14 March 1677 was drafted by the clerk, Andreas de Man. The private agreement is between Johan Bax van Herentals, Commander at the Cape, who borrowed money from Pieter van Wickevoort of Amsterdam.
Johan Bax van Herenthals (14 March 1637 - 29 June 1678), sometimes referred to as Joan Bax, as well as van Herentals, was born in 's-Hertogenbosch and was the governor of the Dutch Cape Colony from 1676 -1678 , succeeding the acting interim governor Ijsbrand Godske as the 7th Commander of the Cape. Agriculture developed during his term and he is recognized as contributing to the development of Botany and Ethnobiology. He declared two wars with the Khoikhoi.
