Lot of 2 items pertaining to the Battle of Holkrantz (Holkrans). (1) Four page leaflet (size 22x14cm) issued for the re-burial of 56 Boer Burgers at Vryheid on 20 January 1905. It features the names if the murdered burgers, the Organising Committee, coffin bearers, processions and protocol of the day etc. (2) The program comes with a hand-written note in pencil which features the list of murdered burgers. The note was probably compiled during the war. Both items are from a collection of the Birkenstock family. (See LOTS 439, 441, 444, 445). F.W. Birkenstock served as chairman of the Monuments Commission during the re-burial.
"To stop the raids operated by the Boers on their cattle and crops as a punishment for helping the British, the leader of the abaQulusi, Sikhobobho, responded by assembling his forces and attacked the commando camp at the foot of Holkrans hill on 6 May, 1902. The Zulus attacked at night, and in a mutual bloodbath, the Boers lost 56 killed and 3 wounded, while the Africans suffered 52 killed and 48 wounded. This battle was the last victory of the abaQulusi to date. -wikipedia
