Two manuscript letters written by J.J. de Villiers from the Kriegs Gevangene Kamp, Ragama, Offiziers Hut, to his brother J.S. de Villiers in the Diyatalawa Camp, Hut 57. Dated 20 Februari 1902 and 20 Mei 1902 respectively.
Each four sides on a single folded sheet of lined paper, 200 x 127 mm, in a neat legible hand.
He discusses personal matters and the lack of letters and news from his wife and family. He asks his brother to assist him in completing his set of ‘De Strever’ the Dyatawala camp’s religious newspaper. He mentions the heat of the Ceylon climate. As prisoner’s letters would have been subject to British military censorship there is no mention of the war at home but as a P.S. to the first letter he writes, ‘Please write do that your letter isn’t cut. A piece was cut out of your last letter.’
