I have tried to give in this book a short sketch of the history of the island of Ceylon, the pearl of the Indian Ocean, and to that I have added a description of some of the natural scenery of the island, in order to give the reader a faint idea of a place, which may be considered as an unknown country to the Africander. Further, I added thereto several contributions by various writers upon various subjects, all, however, connected with the life of the prisoner-of-war at Diyatalawa and Ragama camps. I can only express my hope that these will prove interesting to my readers. To those, who so kindly sent these contributions, I hereby express my heartiest thanks.
