First edition. xvii, 253 pages, 8 full page black and white portraits by different South African artists, bound in full blue leather titled in silver on the spine, housed in a matching blue cloth slipcase, a fine copy.

One of a hundred copies bound in full leather. The presentation page reads Gift Copy at the top of the page and is signed by the contributors who were incarcerated on Robben Island as well as Desmond Tutu who wrote the foreword and Mac Maharaj who edited the book.

Biographical sketches of the artists appear on pages 243 -246

In the foreword Desmond Tutu quotes George Santayana 'Those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it? We need to know our past, to acknowlege it, to atone for it where appropriate, and so to resolve never to let the awful parts of it happen again.'
