South African War 1899 -1902

First edition: 68 pages, frontispiece, 12 plates, folding table, original printed paper boards, which are slightly worn with a yellow cloth spine, a good copy.

Extracted from the first chapter: Formation of the Society pages 1 – 2: A movement was started during the dark and dreary days of October, chiefly on the initiative of Mrs Hanbury-Williams, for the purpose of forming a Society for Aiding the Sick and the Wounded in the War. A public meeting was called for 3rd November. On Wednesday, the 2nd November, the transport "Jelunga" arrived in Table Bay from Natal with the first draft of wounded soldiers from the fields of Talana, Elandslaagte and Dundee. The visible evidence of the horrors of war aroused the sympathetic and patriotic spirit of the Cape Town public, and the meeting held the next day was largely attended by all classes of the community. The meeting took place in the Young Men's Christian Association Hall. His Excellency Viscount Milner (then Sir Alfred), Governor and High Commissioner, General Sir W. Forestier-Walker, His Grace the Archbishop of Cape Town, the Honourable Sir John Buchanan, and a large number of influential men and women expressed their sympathy with the movement, and their desire to assist the cause. This meeting resulted in the formation of the "Good Hope Society for Aid to Sick and Wounded. The Society assisted widely with aid and supplies to military hospitals and also submitted a special report to the Royal Hospitals Commission when it visited Cape Town in October 1900.
