Scarce publication by the Government of the Cape of Good Hope and a very early South African Wine industry item. The Chairman of this committee was John X. Merriman who was subsequently the last Prime Minister of the Cape before Union. Other committee members were J.W. Sauer, J.H. Hofmeyr and a Dr. Smuts. 60 pp. including a 28pp. Appendix in which the wine industry is extensively analysed. Loosely laid into this copy is a handwritten note (dated 23/12/57) to Mr. Immelman (R.F. Immelman - famous librarian of the University of Cape Town for 31 years and author of many books on librarianship and other topics) - questioning whether this book "due for disposal" should not be kept for his collection of books on wine rather than going to another library. The note also deals with other library matters and donations to the library. Signed with the initials M.E. G. - presumably also a librarian.

The booklet may be lacking original wrappers and has been strengthened/backed with modern bookcloth over the spine. The pages are browned and somewhat fragile with some edge chipping of a few front and rear papers.
