8vo (19.6 x 12.7 x 1cm) xxxi + 94pp. + 2 pp. publisher's catalogue. Original brown hardcover binding, with gilt lettering to spine and front board.

'Chiefly translated from original manuscripts in the library of His Excellency Sir George Grey, K.C.B.' (from full title page).

Copy of the late South African poet and novelist Stephen Gray, with his signature to the front free endpaper.

With a lengthy preface by the author. Contents include: I. Jackal fables -- II. Tortoise fables -- III. Baboon tales -- IV. Lion fables -- V. Various fables -- VI. Sun and moon fables -- VII. Heitsi Eibip and other legends -- VIII. Household tales.

Condition: Good. Light rubbing and a few minor stains to the boards and spine. Light wear to corners of boards. Some shelfwear to top and tail of spine. Light foxing throughout, and some browning to the free endpapers and half title page. Split to gutter between front free endpaper and half title page. Minor stains to fore edge of textblock. Pages have been cut. Otherwise still a well bound copy.
