De Luxe Edition: 660 pages, colour frontispiece and 71 colour plates, line drawings and distribution maps in the margins, maps on endpapers, full green leather with red title labels – the leather is faded to brown on the spine, all edges gilt.

'The main feature of this new edition is the complete rearrangement of the colour plates. There are thirty-one new plates by Ken Newman. In some of the others odd birds have been changed or new ones added, or the positions have been rearranged.' Editors' preface. There was both a De Luxe Edition and a Subscribers' Edition of this edition as well as the standard edition. There were 100 De Luxe copies and while no limitation is given for the Subscriber's Edition about 500 names appear in the Subscribers' list.
