The Trustees of the John Voelcker Bird Book Fund dedicate the Sixth Edition of Roberts Birds of Southern Africa to the memory of the late Cecily Niven, D.Sc (honoris causa) (Cape Town), in recognition of her outstanding contributions to the ornithology of Southern Africa. Cecily Niven, the daughter of Sir Percy Fitzpatrick, was born in London on 19th November 1899 and died at her home "Amanzi", near Uitenhage in the eastern Cape on 31st May 1992.
Seven years have passed from the time of the Fifth Edition of Robert's Birds of Southern Africa appeared in March 1985 to the time when the text for the Sixth Edition was sent to the printers. Eight years have elapsed between publication of the Fifth and Sixth Editions. During this period southern African ornithology has made huge strides. Much new information has been accumulated for many species of birds. Additions and changes to the text have therefore been necessary, some of them substantial, all of them important.
