Two books on the subject of South African Rock Art by A. R. Wilcox.

1.) ROCK PAINTINGS OF THE DRAKENSBERG

First edition published in London by Max Parrish in 1956.

96pp. Illustrated with 76 plates in full colour. Book in near fine condition with clean pages and solid binding. Jacket is fair only with loss at the spine ends.

'The rock paintings of the Drakensberg are still almost unknown to the world. This book is the first large-scale representation of rock paintings as they appear in situ. Here, in all the clarity of natural colour photography, we can see something of how they lived, fought and hunted, this almost vanished race of primitive little men - once ranging free over much of South Africa, then beaten back by the encroaching Bantu and white man, and dying out at last in their caves and shelters, high up in the Drakensberg. Theirs is a fascinating story, with its roots deep in prehistory. "Its effective unravelling and retelling", said the late Professor van Riet Lowe in his Foreword, "call for the application of many techniques, not the least of which is the full use of colour photography. In this important, indeed indispensable approach Mr Wilcox is a pioneer and we are deep in his debt." '

2.) THE ROCK ART OF AFRICA

First edition published in Johannesburg by Macmillan in 1984.

287pp. Illustrations in profusion. Book and jacket in fine condition.

'This book brings together in one volume accounts of African rock art which have hitherto been scattered, and even buried, in scholarly monographs, learned journals and travellers' tales. The range of the survey is geophysically comprehensive, from the Atlas Mountains to the Cape of Good Hope. The art styles are set into a firm chronological framework, and are displayed against a background of human, physical and cultural evolution. Considerable discussion is also devoted to the varied purposes which the paintings and carvings served in the communities which produced them. This is an area of great obscurity, and the author canvasses the differing interpretations very fully and fairly.'
