The 1950s saw the emergence of prominent non-professional archaeologists who dedicated themselves to recording rock art through colour photography. Alex Willcox, a quantity surveyor who lived in Bergville, wrote the first book to be entirely devoted to the rock art of the Drakensberg, Rock Paintings of the Drakensberg, Natal and Griqualand East (1956),16 and he was the first person to record paintings by means of colour photography. He wrote several other books on rock art as well as papers, which he illustrated with his slides. Jenkins (E.) Rock art researchers in the Drakensberg pages 54 - 55.
