London: Thornton Butterworth, 1924, 1st edition. Original Green cloth with gilt rhino on upper boards and gilt spine titles. Spine lightly sunned, titles still bright. Firm and tight. Internally very good with numerous black and white ills. A very good copy.
A work of wide ranging sporting adventures, Stewart relates hunting elephant, rhinoceros, lechwe, tsebbe and lion in various parts of Rhodesia [Czech, Africa, p. 267]. There are also chapters on shikar in India for blackbuck, fishing for Shark, Swordfish, and Tarpon, trout fishing in New Zealand -- a real mix of sporting activities. While there are interesting photos throughout, this book is highlighted by the stirring drawings of R. Caton Woodville. The illustrations are remarkable. One in particular shows a rhinoceros charging a man who is airborne as a result of the assault!
