First edition: vol. 1 546 pages, vol. 11 517 pages, colour frontispiece in volume 1 and frontispiece portrait in vol. 11, title page vignettes, profusely illustrated with black and white and colour photographs, colour map at the rear of vol. 1 torn along the middle fold, embossed blind stamp on the title pages in both volumes reads – presentation copy, uncut fore edges and bottom edges, top edges gilt, hinges are worn in both volumes, foxing throughout and on the page edges, brown cloth boards with gilt vignettes on the upper cover, which are slightly scuffed, titled gilt on the spines, a good set.
Sir Marc Aurel Stein, KCIE, FRAS, FBA (Hungarian: Stein Márk Aurél; 26 November 1862 – 26 October 1943) was a Hungarian-born British archaeologist, primarily known for his explorations and archaeological discoveries in Central Asia. He was also a professor at Indian universities.Stein was also an ethnographer, geographer, linguist and surveyor. His collection of books and manuscripts bought from Dunhuang caves is important for the study of the history of Central Asia and the art and literature of Buddhism. He wrote several volumes on his expeditions and discoveries which include Ancient Khotan, Serindia and Innermost Asia.
