It refers not only to the major countries of Southern Africa but areas such as Stellaland & Goshen, Griqualand West, Zululand, Mount Currie, & Tati Territory as well as the various african islands. A comprehensive history with more than half of the book devoted to matters philatelic and which is profusely illustrated.
Two Prefaces, one from each author, and a Foreword by the then Postmaster-General. Divided into two segments, first the postal history (by Rosenthal) and later the stamps (by Blum). 'Southern' Africa is somewhat stretched as the book embraces South West Africa, the Rhodesias, Bechuanaland, Basutoland, Swaziland, Zululand, Tristan da Cunha, St Helena, Marion Is, Sanae (Antarctic), Gough Is, Bouvet Is, Mauritius, Mozambique as well as all the South African provinces and events. There is much general history in Rosenthal's segment.
