Koevoet (crowbar): SA Police special counter-insurgency unit.

The South African Police had one of the best counter-insurgency units called "Koevoet" (Crowbar), achieving a kill rate of 25:1, much higher than the 11:1 SADF average of the Bush war. Its members were mostly black Namibians with white SAP officers. Its success can largely be ascribed to the excellent tracking skills of the Ovambo trackers deployed to find and follow the spoor (tracks) of insurgents, and by using Casper mine-protected vehicles capable of bundu-bashing through most obstacles and keeping its occupants safe even during a double anti-tank mine blast. Coin-ops tactics included running on the spoor (track) while flanked by the Caspers, and leapfrogging a few kilometres ahead to find the spoor, thereby accelerating the pursuit.

Here then are 55 scarce large format b/w photographs taken by the late award winning photographer, Manfred Lindner during his time with the unit in the 1970's. His constant companion, Alsation Police Dog 'Brando' is featured on many of the photographs. Among the many random photos of interest are a few photos of Diepkloof base.

Manfred Lindner later went on to open a photographic studio in Johannesburg. He was a popular photographer with the local film industry and the winner of numerous photographic awards. The photographs listed in this lot have been meticulously sifted out of literally thousands of his photographic prints, which mostly relate to the performing/arts industry. The 55 photos in this lot therefor form the sum total of all the remaining photographs from his time with the SAP.

The last photo of Manfred Lindner shows just some of his awards and is for interest sake only. Please note, it is NOT included in this lot.
