How it works

First issue with the uncorrected error in the title of the frontispiece: 214 pages, folding hand coloured lithographic frontispiece, half dark brown calf with marbled paper sides, a very good copy.

The frontispiece published with the title 'Entrance to the Rownie River'. In most copies this is corrected with a new title pasted over the error - 'Entrance to the Kowie River' – but not in this copy (see photograph).

Mendelssohn (Sidney) South African Bibliography, volume 2, page 165, 'There is a curious misprint in the coloured plate of this copy, in which the "Entrance to the 'Kowie' River" is printed as "Entrance to the 'Rownie' River."

In the " Catalogue of Books relating to South Africa," by Fairbridge and Noble (Cape Town, 1866), T.Phillips is stated to be the author of this work, which was published anonymously.

An account of the British settlements at Albany, founded by the 1820 settlers, and including a description of Kaffraria and its inhabitants. The author spent about three months in South Africa, in the year 1825, and greatly admired the scenery and prospects of the country. He visited several Boers, whom he describes as being very hospitable, good colonists, and hunters. The Kaffirs are carefully and minutely delineated, the writer having collected many particulars respecting their habits, and there is an account of Graham's Town, and a pretty folding coloured plate depicting the entrance to the Kowie River.’

A South African Bibliography, volume 3, page 667, 'Anonymously published selection from the letters of the 1820 settler, Thomas Phillips, to his sister, Mrs Catherine Richardson.'
