en die Stryd in Kaapland (1 Okt. 1901 - 18 Jan. 1902).
Ons Geskiedenis-Serie.
215 pages, 12 plates, decorated brown cloth, a very good copy in the dust jacket which is repaired with tape along the top and bottom edges.
Gideon Scheepers was executed by the British in the Cape Colony in January 1902. After the war he was elevated to the position of an Afrikaner martyr. This account includes a Dutch-Afrikaans diary he kept in imprisonment, mainly in Graaff-ReinetĀ between October 1901 and January 1902. Preller reconstructs the circumstances of Scheepers' controversial trial and execution, gives some background details to his military career and documents the post-war search for his grave and his rise to the position of an icon. Nine chapters documenting the activities of various Cape guerrilla commanders (including De Wet, Smuts, Hertzog and Maritz) provide the best summary of the Boer guerrilla campaign in the Cape. Various Scheepers letters, poems and official British documents which had a bearing on his court case are included as appendices.
