First edition: xi, 306 pages + 8 pages publisher's catalogue, frontispiece portrait of the author, 16 plates, folding map, uncut edges, pictorial green cloth with gilt on the upper cover and titled gilt on the spine, slightly insect scarred along the edges, a good copy.

Czech (Kenneth) An Annotated Bibliography of African Big Game Hunting Books 1785 to 1999 page 277: Sykes relates his military duties in Sudan along the Nile but also mixes in some exciting elements of big-game hunting. There are two chapters on stalking elephant, one on hippopotamus, and one on rhinoceros, as well as a dash of antelope hunting. Major Hobday's illustrations are particularly good.
