First edition: xx, 386 pages + 2 pages publisher’s catalogue, frontispiece, distinctive patterned Rowland Ward border on the title page, 7 plates, numerous black and white illustrations, 2 folding maps – the one next to the index has a slight tear, starting to wear at the front hinge, book plates on front end papers, the brown cloth covers are faded and worn as is the spine which is frayed and at the top and bottom, with a tear in the cloth at the top of the spine, the text on the spine is illegible, a good copy.
Czech (Dr. Kenneth) An Annotated Bibliography of African Big Game Hunting Books 1785 – 1999, page 276: An excellent game shot, Swayne describes his seventeen journeys into Somaliland's interior from 1884 -1893. he hunted elephant near the Golis Range, Jalelo and the Sobat River in 1887. Five years later, while on reconnaissance near the Abyssinian border he bagged rhino near Tuli. In 1893 Swayne collected leopard and oryx while journeying to Harar. Later, near the Webbe Shebeleh River he hunted rhino, lion,leopard and elephant. He also relates an interesting incident of hunting hyena with knife and pistol, In the Golis Range, he successfully stalked trophy kudu. On a second journey to the Webbe Shebeleh, he bagged bushbuck, leopard and lion.
